Subsurface Utility Engineering Process
Since its inception, GHD has provided services related to the Subsurface Utility Engineering process (SUE). The SUE process conforms to the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Standard CI/ASCE 38-02 for the collection and depiction of existing subsurface utility data. SUE is an engineering process utilizing state-of-the-art technology to accurately identify, characterize and map underground utilities during the design phase of a project.
ASCE 38-02 guidelines have four quality levels:
Quality Level A:
For this highest level of the process, nondestructive Vacuum and/or Hydro excavation is used to expose discoveries made through the Quality Level B effort. Exposing the utility allows for confirmation, measurement and mapping of the utility. Deliverables are typically signed and sealed by a licensed Engineer or Surveyor.
GHD provides both vacuum and hydro excavation services. A comprehensive field sketch detailing all discoveries are produced for Client use. GHD does not engage in Professional Engineering or Surveying services.
Quality Level B:
Surface based geophysical equipment and methods are used to designate/locate detectable utilities. Discoveries are marked according to project specifications. Quality Levels D and C tasks are generally incorporated as part of the Level B process.
GHD uses Electromagnetic (EM) and Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) methods to meet the standard as defined by Level B.
Quality Level C:
Visible Surface Feature
Visible utility surface features are compared against existing records found through Level D.
During this phase, omissions and errors are generally noted against existing record drawings (Level D).
Quality Level D:
Information gathered from archived records research. This level can provide a cursory overview of the existence of utilities, but is most likely limited and lacking detail.
GHD provides utility coordination services. We have an extensive up-to-date database of utility owners across the State of Florida. This allows us to easily contact a multitude of utility agencies and acquire available documentation as it relates to any given public or private project.
