EM uses a spectrum of audio and radio frequencies. EM is the most widely used method for locating metallic pipes, wires and cable. A specific transmitted frequency is be applied either directly or indirectly to a target. A receiver detects the transmitted signal along the path of the target.
Passive signal detection is another method for identifying pipes and cables carrying naturally occurring magnetic fields such as 50/60Hz and VLF signal. EM is commonly used and considered accurate in determining horizontal location of buried lines.
Other EM methods include: Transmitting Sondes, Split-box, Ferrous Magnet locators.
